Omega-3s and Omega-6s

1

Recently, members of the Inner Circle were privy to an information session that went into great detail regarding the role hormones play in our emotional content and how to best cultivate the feelings we desire.

Two essential fatty acids, Omega-3s and Omega-6s, were addressed.  Because SPC USA takes a holistic approach to the body, mind, and spirit with regards to Chi Power training, this information on the physical body is being shared with all the members of the chi gung community of interest.

Essential Fatty Acids

Omega-3s and Omega-6s are referred to as “essential fatty acids”, and play a key role in producing “eicosanoids”.  Eeicosanoids are signaling molecules made by oxygenation of twenty-carbon essential fatty acids, (EFAs). They exert complex control over many bodily systems, mainly in inflammation or immunity, and as messengers in the central nervous system.

[Members of the Inner Circle and other practitioners of Chi Power should take special note that eicosanoids actively influence the central nervous system.]

Omega-3s

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids that promote a healthy cardiovascular system, heart health, and alleviate various [clinical] depressions and attention deficit disorders.

Because the body does not produce Omega-3s, it is only obtained via food.  “Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other marine life such as algae and krill, certain plants (including purslane), and nut oils.”

Although Omega-3s essential fatty acids can be found via plant oils, such as flax seed and soy, “the American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon) at least 2 times a week.”  [The Omega-3s derived from fish oil have a higher bio-availability for the human body.]

According to research within the biomedical scientific community, Omega-3 essential fatty acids actually reduce inflamiation and help prevent risk factors associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.

Symptoms of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include extreme tiredness (fatigue), poor memory, dry skin, heart problems, mood swings or depression, and poor circulation. Several studies report possible anti-cancer effects of n-3 fatty acids (particularly breast, colon and prostate cancer).

Studies performed by scientists across the globe have shown Omega-3 fatty acids to reduce and prevent diseases and conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and Parkinson’s disease, and improving the immune system’s overall health and assisting brain memory functions.

More and more scientific studies show Omega-3 fatty acids to alleviate a long list of ailments, including: Bipolar disorder; schizophrenia; Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHA); Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); High blood pressure and Diabetes.

Omega-6s

Omega-6s are essential fatty acids similar to Omega-3s.  Omega-6s, however, are precursors to the eicosanoids that are associated with inflamation.  As such, although needed by the body in moderate amounts, diets high in Omega-6 fatty acids contribute to many [avoidable] ailments, such as: heart attacks, thrombotic stroke, arrhythmia, arthritis, osteoporosis, inflammation, mood disorders and cancer.

Omega Balance

Modern Western diets typically have ratios of n-6 to n-3 in excess of 10 to 1, some as high as 30 to 1. The optimal ratio is thought to be 4 to 1 or lower.

Whereas poultry, vegetable oils, and various “grains” contain high amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids, ocean life forms are the primary source for Omega-3 fatty acids.
